Prevention of Endometrial cancer – Part 1
The exact cause of endometrial cancer, like any other cancer, is unknown. There are certain risk factors however, associated with its development.
Avoiding risk factors and increasing protective factors may help prevent cancer.
The following risk factors increase the risk of endometrial cancer:
- Endometrial hyperplasia
- Obesity, weight gain, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes
- Genetic factors
The following protective factors decrease the risk of endometrial cancer:
- Pregnancy and breast-feeding
- Combination oral contraceptives
- Physical activity
- Cigarette smoking
Paradox yeah? As a matter of fact, several researches have established that cigarette smoking which mostly predisposes to other forms of cancer like lung cancer is capable of reducing the risk of endometrial cancer. It’s more like a case of filling a pit by digging another pit.
Having said that, It is not known if the following factors affect the risk of endometrial cancer:
- Weight loss
- Fruits, vegetables, and vitamins
In order to prevent cancer, a lot of cancer prevention clinical trials are being done. These trials are studied and the outcomes form basis for new cancer prevention techniques. Endometrial cancer is also being studied with clinical trials to discover new ways to prevent it.
